History

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cultural Society of British Columbia began in 1995 as the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Association of Greater Vancouver. Its original mission was simple: to create a welcoming space where Vincentians in Greater Vancouver could connect, celebrate their culture, and support one another. In its early years, the association hosted social gatherings, Independence celebrations, cultural events, and provided support to new immigrants settling in Canada.

As the community grew, the organization expanded its focus from social activities to a broader cultural and community role. This evolution led to the creation of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cultural Society of BC (SVGCSBC), with a more formal structure, an elected executive board, regular monthly meetings, and annual signature events that strengthened leadership and long-term continuity.

A major early milestone came in 2011, when the Society—led by President Donnis Vanloo—partnered with Rotary Clubs in both British Columbia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Together, they raised funds for St. Benedict’s Day Nursery & Orphanage in Kingstown, a significant act of humanitarian support that was later recognized in national media in SVG.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, the Society became more active across the Caribbean community in BC. It joined the BC Organization of Caribbean Cultural Associations (BCOCCA) and took part in major Caribbean festivals and Independence celebrations, helping keep Vincentian culture visible in BC’s multicultural community.

In its early years, SVGCSBC faced common challenges: few volunteers, limited funding, high event costs, and the need for consistent leadership. Despite this, the Society stayed resilient and continued building programs and partnerships.

As times changed, the Society adapted. It improved its online presence, expanded digital communication, and used social media to share updates and events. To increase youth involvement, the Society created programs specifically for teens and young adults. It also began working more closely with local non-profits, community groups, and other cultural organizations to broaden its reach.

Today, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Cultural Society of BC is a strong, multi-generational organization. It continues to celebrate Vincentian heritage while taking on wider roles in education, youth development, cultural preservation, community service, and philanthropy.
